March 11, 2001. In the early hours of March 12, 2001, Emperor Paul I (born 1754) was strangled in his bedroom. The son of Catherine the Great, he proclaimed himself emperor on the day of his mother's death to be crowned on April 5, 1797. Conducting a policy which was utterly different from that pursued by Catherine, Paul, a man of a difficult and unbalanced character, bred lots of enemies with the abolition of some privileges for the gentry. A conspiracy was quick to be formed and the emperor was killed.
