October 2, 2000. A soiree was held in Moscow's Tchaikovsky Concert Hall to commemorate the prominent Russian philologist and public figure Dmitry Likhachev. He became a legend while still alive. Hundreds of people would listen carefully to his discourses broadcast by radio and television, dreaming of encountering him in person one day. He was a very modest man, a true representative of the Russian intelligentsia. By his every word and gesture, he reminded us of what genuine culture and genuine self-dignity are all about. An exhibition dedicated to Likhachev.
