December 20, 2000. 125 years ago the Bolshoi Theatre staged the first performance of the opera Aida by Giuseppe Verdi in Russian. The love story of the daughter of an Ethiopian king and an Egyptian military leader was first staged in 1871 in Cairo. The opera was the composer's 24th work he wrote by proposal of khedive Ismail-pasha. The success the opera made at its debut performance always accompanies it everywhere, no matter what language it is sung on. A scene from the performance. Ye. Obraztsova as Amneris, V.
