Dec. 1930: Riot police with combat-ready water cannon stand by at the 'Mozartsaal' on Nollendorfplatz (Berlin) to protect a performance of the US-produced movie 'All Quiet On The Western Front' (USA 1930) against Nazi disruption. With Goebbels himself in the audience, Nazi agitators blew up the performance and blamed the movie for being jewish propaganda that aimed to debase WW I veterans. The screenplay of 'All Quiet On The Western Front' was written after a novel of the same title by Erich Maria Remarque which was published 2 years before. Both movie and book were banned when Nazis came to power. Built in 1906 the 'Mozartsaal' (concert hall) was part of the theater and entertainment complex 'Neues Schauspielhaus'/'Mozartsaal' and used as a cinema since 1911 - 1930 Vintage property of ullstein bild '
