POINTE SHOES WORN BY THE ROYAL BALLET DANCERS ;
Pointe shoes are a type of shoe worn mainly by female ballet dancers ;
They developed from the desire for dancers to appear weightless and sylph-like and have evolved to enable dancers to dance on the tips of their toes for extended periods of time ;
They add a minimum of 6 inches of height to a dancer ; Anna Pavlova invented the pointe shoe at the start of the 20th century ;
Most female dancers wear out 2-3 pairs of pointe shoes per week ;
A ballerina dancing a full length role might wear out 2-3 in one performance and during a performance of Swan Lake the principal dancer playing Odette/Odile may wear 3 different pairs of pointe shoes ;
The Royal Ballet get through c. 7,000 pairs of pointe shoes each Season costing about L250,000 ;
