February 22, 2001 is the 165th birth anniversary of Mitrofan Belyayev /1836-1904/, a wealthy timber merchant, and art patron who contributed to the development of Russian music and musical culture. Received musical education at home, played the piano and the viola. In the 80-s and 90-s of the 19th century, he formed a society of musicians, later known as the Belyayev Circle. Founded Russian Symphony Concerts and Russian Quartet Soirees, where he popularized works of the so-called New Russian Music School, and a publishing house called M.Belyayev in Leipzig, which specialized in compositions written by Russian musicians and became, after a while, one of Russia's major publishing centres.
