December 19, 2000, marks the 85th anniversary of French chanteuse Edith Piaf /1915-1963/ ('Piaf' is the slang for 'sparrow'). She lived a very short life of 48 years. But the audience adored her. A hard destiny, often full of absurdities, was part and parcel of her creative work. Edith's songs could not differ from her life which she herself chosen. She managed to give impetus to many prominent talented people such as Yves Montand, Charles Aznavour and Gilbert Becaud -- all of them started their careers beside Piaf. Her fame is wonderful and magic. Today a full CD collection of Piaf's songs sell out instantly in Paris, though it costs $150. Photo by Sputnik Images. B00 - 143.
